Gentlemen. The Audio Eyra Scholz Sugarcone Alnico is now a GO!

I think the original timeframe is/was late December. However Tim wanted to play it safe so people weren’t wondering where their speakers are so he’s under promising and hopefully over delivering.

Gotcha. I have a TR 1x15 cab so I’ll leverage that with the speaker to start. Today’s project, if I get to it, is to install an EVM12L with a 12” SugarCone in a TR 2x12 cab and see how they sound together based on some posts I saw on TGP. I may then move the other sugarcone into one of Tim’s 1x12 cabs that I have.

Rare Amp Dream Team. I put EVM12L and Sugarcone into a TR 2x12 cab slanted horizontally. EVM12L is rated at 200W. Sugarcone at 100W. Both 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel (4 ohm total impedance). I was expecting the EVM12L to potentially overwhelm the Sugarcone a bit but but I found the opposite. When I first started listening it felt like more volume was coming out of the left side (where the Sugercone was) so I went up close, tried sitting at different angles, etc.. and that is actually the case, unless it's the highs from the Sugercone giving me that impression. I don't get it since the EVM12L also has a slightly higher sensitivity rating. Anyway, they sounded nice together but I think I prefer the 2x12 with 2 Sugercone's. Is what I am sharing technically impossible given the speaker specs? It is a bit early and I'm still drinking coffee....

Likely what you’re hearing is the accentuation of the high mid on the sugar.
Also, I was just having this conversation last night with someone else.

Take into account the full detail of a speakers function. For starters unless a speaker is put into the enclosure it was actually designed for. The spec sheet becomes less important.

EV12L was designed to be used in a ported thiel cabinet. In fact when EV tested and rated the 12L that’s what they used. When you change the variables from what is “spec”. Then those details change as well.

Also, when you take into account an ev12L was designed as a “loudspeaker” as most speakers were up until 1989. What that means is they were really designed with sound systems and sound reinforcement in mind. The use of them and really most other speakers prior to 89 just happen to also work (somewhat) in guitar cabinets. Again, not to their optimum performance based on cabinet design. Only caveat to this is maybe Jensen but even those were monitor speakers. Also, we could consider age of speaker and magnetization factors of that speaker.

So, with that information. Scholz speakers are actually designed for guitar and their enclosures. Also, since the Scholz speakers are new. Age of cone and magnetization are not going to be a hindering factor. Basically, to answer your question. Yes, it is possible what you’re hearing and actually quite likely.

A very important thing I’ve learned over the years about specs. Specs are merely a starting point. They are almost never an end point result especially in musical creation and reproduction.

As an example, think about the fuel mileage rating on a vehicle window sticker when you buy a new car. That’s ideal perfect situation fuel mileage under optimum conditions. I have rarely matched those numbers on any vehicle I have owned.

Typically because real world utilization is not a controlled environment.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Agree with Rob.
I also usually prefer not mixing different speakers in the same cab; if I want to combine the sound/feel of different speakers I always end up mixing different cabs, each cab being matched to / “optimized” for whatever is the one speaker model in each cab.

All I can add is that I have two 12” SCs in a cheap Avitar cab, and it sounds absolutely glorious with the Audio Eyra JKL. I can’t say I have heard better, anywhere. Well, better playing for sure, but not better tone. For my needs, I can’t imagine more. That said, I have put in my preorder for the SC 15.

i need to play my JKL through the ceramic SC some more. It's a great sounding speaker. Really looking forward to the alnico version(s), too.

i like those avatar cabs a lot.

I just got an email that said the speakers will be here first quarter 2026. I think there was a delay from the initial late December early Jan. Because of a logistics thing.

I can’t wait until they get here as I have a AE Little GEM amp waiting for speaker.
