TGP?

Dear all,
I've thought twice about posting this but have to ask: what is going on with TGP?
Am I the only one who finds just weird the new surprise blocking message I just bumped into trying to access the forum, forcing you to "activate new authentification method", asking for your password before you can access anything whereas you're already logged in??
Did I miss a PA warning message overthere the last few weeks saying it was coming ?

from what i can tell, there has been a metric ton of people getting scammed. they're trying to keep that from happening as best they can with 2FA.

I can imagine the incentive and I'm not challenging the "why", but just find the "how" disturbing to say the least.
I mean, the way it looks to me that may as well be a fishing attempt by someone having hacked their site...
Best case, forcing such change and blocking the site / your account access without notice is just... well, rude, and not a good practice to me.
Seriously considering being done with that site (TGP) to be honest.

I have been considering that for a while. Still cool to hang there occasionally. I also like the ability to promote gear there that is interesting to me, but the guys there who are jerks and/or the constant dealing with guys who want to be a big dog or have some axe to grind is definitely tiresome.

I’m not a fan of the new system. Or the recent new ownership. The culture of TGP is radium turning into the old harmony central forum where’s it’s just a free for all of negative diatribes from people just lamenting their non experienced opinions.

The timing of this forum couldn’t be better in my opinion.

I agree. Really has gotten pretty toxic over there. Recent threads where people are simply sharing a piece of gear they’ve acquired and mostly negative replies because it “cost too much” are a microcosm of the badness there now.

I’ve been a TGP member since March 20, 2002. Since the very beginning there have always been people on TGP who thrive on being argumentative and disrespectful, are simply ignorant, are jealous of people who own high-end gear, or who have a mental health issue marked by unstable emotions, a distorted self-image and an overwhelming need to be noticed. Unfortunately there are many people on Internet forums and social media sites like Facebook and Instagram that can’t discern the difference between verifiable facts and opinions that are based on personal views, beliefs, or feelings that cannot be definitively proven.

There are people on TGP that I just ignore because what they want is your attention and I’m not going to waste a moment of my time giving them what they’re hoping for. And there are also a lot of people on TGP who are very knowledgeable who kindly share loads of technical information on things like amp circuits or complex guitar maintenance issues, and very experienced musicians who share their insights and knowledge about things like music theory, technique, and performing. That’s the part of TGP that I find valuable. Plus I’ve made some real-life friendships with some of the people I’ve met through TGP that I value very much.

Well said! I've also made some incredible friendships on TGP over the years and even reconnected with my guitar teacher from when I was a teenager learning. We've since rekindled our friendship and even though I had no idea at the time he's always been an enormous gearhead! Seems we all are attracted to eachother haha.

Definitely a very balanced and true take here. I probably spend more time there than I should, which gives the impression of more people displaying those negative traits you’ve shared than me focusing on the more positive ones.

Good points, I agree.
For years I've focused on a couple of sub-forums and specific threads where most of the interesting discussions happen to me & "forum buddies" post (mainly amps & rig/rack effects, and the newer "Vintage"one ), and scan there from time to time the new threads titles for what could light up my interest.
And there's been the classifieds.
I just ignore all / most of the rest.

I think for me I think of what it was in the beginning days and how many knowledgeable and good people there were. You guys are right there are still good people there. In fact, almost all the people that were selected to join this forum came from TGP. I think the signal to noise ratio is just much higher than it used to be since TGP for me is the only social media I use. And now here. I think it perhaps echos for me bigger than it is. I never had Facebook, instagram or Twitter X or any of that stuff. I’m old school. Almost all of my contacts are in my phone.

But back to the point that was made. I have made some great friends and contacts because of
TGP. Beckstriad being one of them. As well as many on this forum. You guys are right. It’s not so bad. Haha
