This clip is from a gig my fusion band played last night. I’m using my 1956 Les Paul Custom modded with 1960 PAF’s, the Marshall Line Amp I received from Tim Thompson of Audio Eyra this week, a Jim Kelley 1x12 with an Electro-Voice EVM-12S and a little bit of reverb from a UA Golden Reverberator. I did the recording with a Zoom F8n Pro Multitrack Field Recorder and a pair of Neumann KM 184 mics in a XY configuration.
Marshall amps produce great tones and they’ve been used on tons of classic recordings that I love but I have always struggled to make them work for me. The Marshall platform that Tim built and the addition of Jim Kelley’s Line Amp harmonic generator circuit is quite extraordinary, and I’m just at the beginning of understanding how to dial it in. On the surface Marshall amps are pretty simple, but the Marshall Line Amp has a huge palette of tones available and the dynamics resulting from varying your pick attack is amazing.
