Voodoosound sent me a message asking me to listen to the Commodores’ classic “Easy”, learn it (sort of), and try different ideas :

I listened to it this week a few times and then tried to learn it the first time yesterday by ear. I’m not sure I’m even close to correctly playing, but here are some different ideas that could be done with that song structure:

Awesome! So the story behind this. I have 2 ways I write music. One is a put on movie I like turn the sound off. Usually, some type of adventure or epic type and I write my own soundtrack to it as I watch the movie. Been doing it that way for about 30 years.

About 6 years ago I started listening to classic songs I really liked and taking what I thought were the epitome of that song. I’d then just do my own thing to it and then I do it again and again. Basically varying the style and everything about the song so it’s really my own thing. Could say just using the song for inspiration. I know lots of folks may write this way. But the cool thing I’ve found is it can be journey. Literally you could write a whole album from one simple concept from that spark of idea. Easy is such a solid foundational song. There’s so much that can be done with it.

Below are a couple clips I just hammered out on my backyard patio. It’s my Godin unplugged. Not the greatest clips or playing by a long shot but you get the idea.

If you feel inclined please post a version. I always thought it was a fun exercise to hear how others interpret a piece. The creative spirit is what music is all about.

Beckstriad you went above and beyond with yours, please excuse my laziness. Haha
