Can we talk about speakers for a minute?

Used my Sugarcone today at band practice. Sounded good and got positive comments from the bandmates on it.

It sounded especially clear and easily heard, which I’m frankly a bit surprised about because I was just using the 112 cab and the other guitarist was using a 212 with higher efficiency speakers. No problem keeping up or poking through.

i'm going to put my other sugarcone into my audio eyra launch 1x12 cab today (either that or my OG+) cab that has one of @Echoplexi 's old SROs in it. I want to try it out with a bunch of different amps today. My plan is to play it through Kingsley Bastion, Dumble ODR style, Stark Fire, Stark X-ray, Bruno Underground Custom, Audio Eyra Octo-Quad (or proto), and Sebago Overdrive Deluxe quad. Going to try to make clips with each one if I can.

My family and I went up to Boston to a Celtics game and dinner afterwards, so I had a looper playing a riff through my Sugarcone for about 7 hours today while we were gone. Curious to see after that, and yesterday’s band practice, if any changes have been made.

I feel like the rookie in the group as there are some heavy hitter on this forum. I have mostly played EV speakers in a Dumble style oval back 1x12. I have for many years used an EV12L SRO ceramic as my main speaker with a Bludotone Mordecai. That’s my home base. I recently tried the Eminence 12LN Neo to lighten the load and I really enjoyed it compared to the SRO. I also got a 1x12 cab from Audio Eyra with the sugarcone and I really like the speaker.

is the 12LN neo a comparable speaker to the 12L?

Yes it’s a Neo. Shed 13lbs off the cab has less highs than the EV12L SRO.
Sounded great with the AE OG+.

i need to check that out. i have had one neo speaker and it sounded really good, but was a Celestion. Those are generally not my favorite speakers. But a neo version of a 12L that sounds great would be awesome.

Speakers are such an important piece of the puzzle.

I’m also a big EV12L and SRO fan.

I want so badly to love Celestions, but the only ones I end up keeping are Cream Alnicos. Love the sound other people get with greenbacks, etc.

For a new ceramic magnet speaker, I really like the Fane F70 (especially with my Hiwatt, obviously).
I don’t bond with celestions at all. The only ones I’ve found that can be useful to me. Cream Alnicos, the Fullback and some very early 80 rolas. However, they are all very specific to their uses. Unlike an SRO which really works extremely well with everything. Or a sugarcone

I feel the same. Now that I understand the core sound I hear from Celestion speakers generally, I know what they’ll work with and what they won’t for me.

Thanks for posting that Ed. Haven’t been able to get to mine yet. It’s unusually hot here due to humidity. Can’t be in doors at all even at the beach. Weather today says expect a heat wave for the next few days. I thought we were already in one. lol.

I’ll get some clips up as soon as I can stand to be in the house.

Well yesterday I had delivered to me something I’ve been waiting for, for about 3 months or so. What is it you ask?

About 4 months ago. I connected Tim of Audio Eyra with George Scholz of Scholz electronics. This of course was after I requested 2 speakers. An alnico 15 sugarcone and a 12 Alnico sugarcone.

It just so happens I told Scholz I really wanted a modern day speaker that could rival or (with no real thought it actually happening) best my favorite SRO 15s and 12s. I think it’s fairly well known those are my absolute favorites and I’ve shared that with many of you whom also found the magic of those speakers.

I’m here to tell you. I tested those prototypes today against my best SROs.
What I don’t understand is why hasn’t anyone done this before. Scholz did something I never thought possible.
This 15 is better than any SRO I’ve ever played or heard. The 12 could easily be an SRO but even smoother.

This is a complete mind blower for me.

Here’s what the super cool thing is. Tim loved them so much he has decided to team up with Scholz to have these speakers made exclusively for Audio Eyra.
These speakers will be labeled and branded with both companies. Another iconic partnership like Jim Kelley.

I will post clips here and provide pics of the 2 prototype speakers. So everyone can see and hear for yourself. At least best you can with my meager clips. Haha

These are really extraordinary speakers.
I will still get to the smooth cone sugars also. But in. The meantime you guys have Ed’s excellent clips.

Oh one other thing. Tim wanted these speakers exclusively for his amps. However, I talked him into offering a portion of his order to people that want them for other things. More to come on that too. They sound amazing with my Kelley amps and stock fenders. Even my Dumbles :)
